The Blu Could Be the World’s First Wearable Smartphone

Wearable or wrist-mounted smartphones have always been the stuff of sci-fi, movies, and video games but the people behind the Blu are trying to change that and turn fiction into reality.

blu-flexible-smartphone-01The Blu is a project on IndieGogo for a flexible wrist-mounted smartwatch. Its main feature is a flexible display and body that can be bent to form a wrist-worn bracelet. According to the designers, it uses a Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (F-OLED) display which has the ability to roll into a 5.5-inch circumference circle as well as a flexible circuit board and a flexible Flex-ion battery. The display will be protected by Corning Willow Glass which is a flexible version of the company’s Gorilla glass.

It supposedly will also be equipped with a 13-megapixel camera, a nano-SIM port, and an invisible speaker. According to the designers, they’ve developed a Gesture Oriented User Interface (GOUI) that tracks the orientation of the wrist to adjust the position of the device’s interface to keep it aligned with the user’s view.

The project is currently seeking funding of $1 million with, as of this writing, 14 days left to complete funding. Funding is currently at a little over $93,000 so the team behind Blu are going to need a lot of help to reach their goal in half a month’s time.
